Sandra Kelly - Hair Designer - In Focus . How lon Sandra Kelly - Hair Designer - In Focus
.
How long have you worked in the industry ?
.
O god lm 28 years in the industry.
.
3-How did you get started ?
.
I qualified as a hairdresser and decided l wanted to see the world, so travelled 4 years and when l came back an old hairdresser friend had a makeup artist friend that worked in Film. She asked my friend did she know any hairdressers that could put on wigs. So l got in contact with her went down to the Curragh, put on a wig to show them l could do it, got my photo taken for my ID top security than. And the fellowing week l was in a big Tent at 5am doing a hundred FCA guys hair for Braveheart.
.
4- What's your favourite work related memory ?
.
l have lots of favourites, when l was a Trainee it was Micheal Collins as l worked with the wonderful Dee Corcoran @dee.corcoran Hair Designer so amazing doing period styles and meeting famous actors, I had a crush on Aidan Quinn .😁
.
As an assistant again so many Dancing at Lughnasa memories with another wonderful Hair Designer Bernie Dooley as it was great to work with all those amazing female actors lots of girlie talk !!
.
Then when l became a Hair Designer again so many but l suppose the recent one has to be designing Normal People as it was such a joy to work on the cast, crew, directors and Producers were all so brilliant. And it's nice to get recognised for your work… Maireanne Fringe!!
.
What advice do you have for those starting out ?
.
First of all it’s good to be a qualified hairdresser as you will be asked to do all aspects of hair. The hours are hard but if you have the passion for it you won’t mind getting up at 4am.
.
You need a car as you will be carrying so much gear with you and some locations are in remote places. But most of all remember you're always learning as it’s very different than being in a salon. So watch , listen and enjoy it as it’s the most rewarding job at the end of the day. And l be nothing without my team so be a team player and help all and be nice to everyone.

How long have you worked in the industry ?

12 years
.
How did you get started ?

From a young age I wanted to do make up for screen, after finishing school I had no idea if there was a film industry in Ireland or how I would go about getting work so I choose another path, and got myself an BA Degree in Irish&Philosophy.

A few years later the urge hadn't gone away so I returned from living in London and went back to college and trained in film, theatre, media make up with some special effects. From there I worked on anything creative I could until I crossed paths with a DOP who put me in touch with Tom Mc Inerney @puffjockey and Sonia Dolan @sonjdol1 , a few weeks later I had my first big film job on a show called Camelot. I was 26 at this point and had worked in various sectors prior to film and I knew almost instantly this was the dream I had been chasing for all those years!
.
What's your favorite work related memory ?

There are so many, it's hard to choose just one, so here are some of the highlights! A few years ago I went to London to work on the most recent James Bond film (No Time to Die) I got this job through sending my CV out which doesn't always happen in our industry, I entered the crowd room on my first day in Pinewood working alongside 50 other make up artists and I didn't know one person, for any of us working in Ireland this is unusual, we are all pals! I got to do some beautiful make ups and got wonderful feedback and it was an all round amazing experience that took me out of my comfort zone!

Crowd Room Supervisor was the fabulous Andrea Craknell @andrea_cracknel1 . Make Up Designer Daniel Phillips.

How did you get started?

I was always intrigued by the old Hollywood movies and anything that looked theatrical. I loved doing peoples hair but knew I didn't want to work in a salon. So I did a PLC course in theatre studies in Inchicore after my leaving cert. There I met Val Sherlock who was our hair and wig tutor he got me into working on the Operas and The Abbey Theatre with him.. At the same time I trained in Toni and Guy for a few years as a colourist.

When I went to Australia I worked for about a month in Toni and guy but decided one day to pop into The Sydney Opera house to ask for a job! I ended up working for The Sydney Theatre Company on a show in The Opera house as the hairstylist which was amazing  so when I came back to Ireland I wanted to give TV and Film a go thanks to Val I got in and have never looked back!
.
Whats your favourite work related memory?
.
Oh I have a few ... ones that stand out are doing a documentary up on The Swiss Alpes for about a month lugging our equipment up and down on the most scenic train ride everyday.

I loved working on Ripper Street for the Victorian hairstyles and alongside a great team.

Working on 'Brooklyn' and Lorraine Glynn being nominated for a Bafta for best Hair... luckily I was able to go, being eight months pregnant  and getting all glammed up was fun!

Last year I worked on Disenchanted looking after Idina Menzel (Elsa from Frozen) which earned me big brownie points from my Daughter Fia!!! Orla Carroll created such fab period Disney looks and I really enjoyed colouring some of the wigs for it!
.
What advice do you have for those starting out?

It can be overwhelming being on set its like a circus behind camera! Heads up no matter where costume hair or make up stand we are always in the way lol.

Our work is really creative and fun so enjoy and soak up as much knowledge from your peers. Its all about team work and an overall look.

How long have you worked in the industry ?

Since 2005, jeepers 17yrs already, time flys when you’re having fun!
.
How did you get started ?

I went to IADT @nfs_iadt to study makeup under Toni Delany. Once I left I managed to get a list of all the makeup designers and sent out my cv. Luckily some got back to me and I got a chance to do some dailies. It just went from there. I think my first proper job was Stardust the tv mini series. The next job after that was as a daily in the crowd room on the tudors Season 1. I remember my first day arriving to Ardmore studios for the very first time being totally overwhelmed, it was incredible for my young mind! The details of the sets and costumes blew me away.
.
What's your favourite work related memory ?

There’s too many. Locations always top the list. Getting to go where most people don’t. Arriving to work in the dark and then stepping outside after the makeup call to beautiful sunrises and scenery never fails to awe us all. I’ve a lot of great memories from working on a film called Dublin Oldschool. The cast and crew all gelled so well and put so much love into that project, everyday brought something special with it.
.
What advice do you have for those starting out ?

Always ask questions 🙌 Be mindful of all around you. Always be kind and respectful. Keep you’re eyes and ears open. You’ll learn so much this way.

Keep pushing yourself to learn new things.

Invest in good outdoor waterproof boots!

How long have you worked in the industry ?
.
I got my start in the industry in 2015 so coming up on 7 years....the time has flown by!
.
How did you get started ?
.
When i got my make up qualification I worked on beauty counters and weddings. I always had an interest in working in make up in film but life took me in other directions for a time.

In 2015 a friend put me in touch with Ciara Scannell @ciarso who was running crowd on Vikings. A few texts and emails later and I was booked for my first day as a trainee. I made myself available for as many days as possible and started getting calls for days on other jobs as I found my feet a little more. I think it's safe to say that i was hooked on the work straight away.
.
Whats your favourite work related memory ?
.
There are genuinely so many I wouldn't know where to start!

Working in film you get to visit some spectacular places and see a side of them that not many do.  Watching sunrise in Lugalla, seeing Enniskerry transformed into a fairytale village, learning to appreciate the sneakiness of goats and travelling back in time to a medieval castle are all perks of the weird and wonderful world of film.
.
But getting to work with an amazingly talented, kind, funny and dedicated bunch of humans is hands down the highlight of working in this industry. Getting through long, tough days on set in crappy weather is only made possible with lots of laughs, hard work, waterproofing and copious amounts of delicious coffee.
.
What advice do you have for those starting out ?
.
Invest in a good waterproof coat and boots as soon as you can.

Remember that you're not expected to know everything...ask questions and be enthusiastic about learning. One of the great things about this job is that there is always something new to learn or tips to pick up from other make up artists.

Be observant and help your colleagues when you have the opportunity to.

Be kind and treat everyone with respect.
